Hi guys! So I’m currently suffering from a dreadful disease called Summer Fever. Having Summer Fever means that all I want to do is lie on the beach and work on my tan, read a good book, and eat frozen yogurt. Okay so it’s not exactly dreadful, however it does make real life a lot more difficult. I recently got to take a mini vacation for a few days to Hilton Head Island, SC to visit some family. It was so great and I got to do all the things that I mentioned, worry and carefree. It was so nice just to have a little break from the craziness that is between the nonstop flow of work and dance. I also got to spend some quality time with my little cousin who I don’t see often which was so nice (he’s a passionate foodie just like me). I came back home refreshed, tan, and feeling summer vibes. However, now I can’t walk ten minutes to get to the beach, my tan is peeling (really gross) and my vibes are turned back towards work and dance. The later part isn’t so bad but I’m pretty bummed about the first two. I had never been to Hilton Head before this trip and I’m so glad I got the chance to see this cute little island! It’s definitely a great place to escape.
Unlike many beaches and islands, Hilton Head is not over-commercialized. It keeps the simplicity of an island town yet there is so much to do. All the shops, restaurants, and other businesses are hidden behind beautiful trees and other greenery; the natural surroundings have been preserved as much as possible which is so cool. One of the beauties of the island that really fascinated me was the beautiful trees that were adorned with Spanish moss hanging from the branches. They were so beautiful, majestic, and a really cool opposition to the usual beach palm trees. We had these trees right outside our window, so every morning I would go sit out on the porch that overlooked the courtyard and enjoy my morning latte alongside my Harry Potter book, (which I am loving by the way!), and just take in the scenery.
As I mentioned earlier, this side of my family has a passion for food and health as much as I do, so let’s just say we ate like kings and queens while I was there! I learned some super great new recipes and tried some new things as well. It’s always great to expand my foodie horizons and branch out. As far as the food on the island goes, it was FABULOUS! We went to several restaurants and they were all sooooo good. As far as seafood goes, we went to Marley’s Island Seafood Grille which was so fun, unique, and scrumptious! We ordered everything from calamari, to shrimp wrapped in bacon, fried yucca, and my delicous entree which was a crab cake with a Caribbean aioli sauce. The restaurant had this wonderful Caribbean atmosphere with great music and beautiful bright colors and decor.
Probably my favorite place we went the entire trip was Java Burrito. This place has the best concept ever! I could live off burritos and coffee…and by combining them….this place was like heaven for me haha. And the best part is, everything is ORGANIC! I got a rice bowl and filled it to the brim with all the essentials of a delicious Mexican meal like chicken, guacamole, and jalapenos. As for my coffee fix, I got their Mexican Mocha Iced Latte which was extremely tasty. I’m about to put a request in for one of these in Asheville….that would be AWESOME.
So if you don’t already know, I am a fro-yo fanatic. When I lived in Utah I had it at least once a week, and a considerable sized helping at that. I had been craving some really good fro-yo and I finally found some on the island at a place called Orange Leaf. I defintiely got my wish because the frozen yogurt was so good! The flavors that I got consisted of white chocolate, coconut cake, and chocolate brownie. Their topping bar was fabulous and I loaded down with shredded coconut, cookie dough bites, and cheesecake bites. Such a great treat!
I would love to say I got some added workouts in this week by doing yoga or running on the beach, but truthfully…I did no such thing. I guess I burned some calories from all the walking we did to the beach and on the beach. My body received a much needed break and now I’m back to the grind. When you go on vacation, you can’t worry about the constant stress of calories, workouts, and body critiquing; that’s why it’s called VACATION (an extended period of recreation from the home). We all need a break sometimes and this adorable little island was the perfect getaway.
Don’t mind me, I’m just on island time,
Ashlyn Tori <3
